Black Hat Techniques You Must Avoid

There is a grey line between ethical SEO “White hat” and subversive SEO “Black hat” techniques. So often what one SEO Guru would consider “Black hat” another SEO expert might consider ethical. However there is a general consensus of opinion that the following are to be avoided techniques are to be avoided:

• link farms,
• reciprocal linking,
• three way linking,
• hidden text,
• keyword stuffing
• doorway pages and
• paid links
• doorway pages

If you participate in any of the above you run the risk of your SERPS nosediving. It is easy to stray and try and get a quick solution to increasing your search engine ranking, however the truth is there is no quick fix solution that wouldn’t be red flagged a spamming of some kind by the search engines. Some methods can have the desired affect of promoting your search engine ranking for a given key phrase – on a temporary basis. It is believed that search engines measure activity over a period of time and are constantly checking current activity against historical activity. This acts as a safe guard against search engine spamming.

Even natural search activity – such as Internet users interrogating Google for more information regarding Michael Jackson at the time of his death – can be perceived as ‘Spamming’. So what ever techniques you employ they must be consistent with the natural search engine optimisation process. This why 7 SEO never use any of the above techniques. All our methods conform with Google guidelines and approved procedures.

Domain name
A key factor in determining ranking for a particular search term is whether the keyword is contained within the URL. e.g. www.7SEO.co.uk contains the search term SEO. For many uncompetitive search terms it is possible to rank highly for a search term exploiting this factor alone. In fact there is a whole industry grown up on exploiting this factor.

Domain Age
Another factor affecting ranking is how old your domain is. If your domain is new i.e. less than two years old this can affect your ranking slightly negatively. Search engines view the website as less well established. If the domain name is less than six months old the factor affects ranking even more so – particularly for competitive search terms. There is another factor widely reported as the ‘Google Sandbox Affect’ and there are other postings on this website that discuss this in more detail.

Website content
The content of your website and it’s relevance is another key factor which search engines measure in order to rank sites. Ultimately search engines measure relevance above all and look to the nature and amount of the content to ascertain where they should rank a particular site for a search term. Broadly speaking the more relevant content that your website has relating to a particular search term the higher it will rank. The creation and alteration of website content to reflect what search engines measure favourably for a particular search term is called ‘On Page Optimisation.’ A well optimised site can often rank well for certain key terms simply because the website and content is structured in such a way as to rank highly among search engines.

Websites Linking to your Site
Links from other websites to your site are another key factor that search engines measure. However, the quality and quantity of links vary greatly. A single link from an authority site such as ‘New York Times’ or the BBC would be valued extremely highly by the search engine. To measure links the search engines crawl websites and follow the link potentially to your site. This is how they determine the ‘Value’ of the link. Other factors relate to how many links are coming form that particular site/page. So not all links have the same ‘value.’ In fact there are a number of techniques which link building companies employ in order to ‘Fool’ the search engines into regarding a particular site as an authority site – these techniques can have a detrimental affect on ranking and are often called ‘Black Hat’ techniques.

Relevant Content that Appears in other Search Engines
Increasingly search engines measure relevant content that links back to your site from other authoritative sources such as Facebook Twitter Youtube Squidoo and Social Bookmarking sites. Relevant content can be placed on these sites that links back to your own site and search engines not only measure the link but can place this content in the search result. Often you will see Youtube videos appearing in the search results for a particular search term. Google is refining this process of when to show content form other search engines in it’s search results.

Local SEO packages

Our low cost Local SEO packages start at 250 pounds for low competition search terms. A good indication of the competitiveness of a search term is to key the search term into a search engine such as Google and if the competing results are less than 250,000 then this campaign may suffice and result in your website achieving a page 1 ranking for your chosen search term e.g. the search term ‘Plumbers West End Glasgow’ returns 143,000 results our Basic Local SEO Package will usually result in a page 1 ranking for this search term providing your website is reasonable. For more competitive search terms such as those that have competing results in excess of 250,000 but less than 500,000 results then a higher package is recommended. For Search results of between 500,000 – 750,000 such as ‘Electricians Glasgow’ (688,000) then our Advanced Local SEO package would usually result in Google Page 1. Search engine optimization (Optimisation) or SEO as it is commonly called refers to the art/science of gaining higher rankings in Google or other search engines. Many Search Engine Optimisation Companies offer various SEO Packages or SEO Services in order to achieve this single aim. If you look at our SEO packages or Local SEO Packages you will notice that our techniques primarily involve building or modifying your website to reflect the target keywords that you are hoping to rank for. This involves choosing search engine friendly URL’s and a directory structure and content that reflects the target keywords.

Your first task for Search Engine Optimisation is to choose a search engine friendly domain name. Ideally one significantly close to your target keywords. This works well now but there is talk about Google reducing the importance of having the target keyword in the domain name. Optimised Website Structure

Before building any website you must conduct keyword research to decide upon the appropriate website structure that reflects your target keywords as you know that this is one of the factors that Google bots will be measuring when they crawl your site. For instance if your url contains the keyword Google and there is a link form your Home Page Google will most probably rank that site higher than it would otherwise. Website Optimisation begins with the structure.

Title Tags

The Page Title is the text between the <title></title> tags. If there is one necessary element, this is it. Not only for SEO reasons, but also because users rely on it to know what a page is about.

The title is also very important because most of the time, it is used in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages). A well put together page title can have a much higher click-through rate.

Here is an example from Hotels.com.

Their main keyword is [hotels]. Its a good title because they the main keyword, once as the first word, and once later in the sentence, and it is also very user friendly. It makes sense. If you try searching for [hotels] in Google, you will see that they have been very successfully. (I must add that that success has come from Off-Page Search Engine Optimization or Link Building.

Body Text
The body text is any text between the <body></body> tags. Body text, or page content is important for on-page optimization, because without it, there is very little for search engines to judge a site by. More body text is generally better, but you want to keep paragraphs short (short paragraphs help hold the attention of readers). Use your keyword as much as you can In A Reasonable Manner. Overuse of your keyword will result in an Over Optimization Penalty (OOP).

Important elements of the Body Text

• First Sentence of the Body Text

Try to use your keyword somewhere in the first sentence of the body text. It sets the tone, and reinforces to the search engine the fact that the keyword is important.

• H1 Tag and H2 Tag Text

The H1 text is the text between the <H1></H1> tags, and H2 tags are used in the same manner. These tags are called Header tags. Meaning that they should describe everything that is under them. Header tags are helpful for on-page optimization, and letting search engines know what a page is about, but if you do not use them, its not the end of the world.

• Anchor Text (internal)

Anchor text is anything between <A></A> tags. In other words these are links. Anchor text helps search engines know what the link leads to. So a link with the anchor text Click Here is not very descriptive, while one that makes use of your keyword is much better.

One element of the Anchor tag that is usually overlooked is the Anchor Tag Title. This is not visible unless the user hovers the mouse pointer over the link. Here is an example for the keyword [foo].

• IMG ALT Attributes

The IMG ALT is important for on-page SEO and probably more important because it is required by law. For disabled users who cant see your images, the alt text should describe what the image is. This is a good thing because its another place to use your keyword.

• URL/ File Name

It can be helpful for pages to be named using the keyword. For example if a page is about Green widgets, then you would name the page green-widgets.html. Always make sure to use a hyphen and not an underscore (do noteven think about using a space), since most search engines have a hard time with underscores.

Meta Tags
Meta Description and Meta Keywords
Meta tags go anywhere in the <head></head> tags. They are only for search engine use. There is a good reason that I have put Meta Tags at the end of this article. They are becoming less important to on-page search engine optimization. With that said, it cannot hurt to use them. I will briefly describe and give examples of both.

Meta Description:
Include a complete, descriptive sentence that describes the page. Make sure to use your keyword, but do not go overboard.

Meta Keywords:
Include a list of keywords. The best way is to write your body text, and then select keywords from that text. Do not use keywords that are not in the page.

I think you get the idea. 7 SEO follow all the above guidelines when optimising the ‘Home Page’ of a client. Link Building Packages

We always recommend a program of link building to accompany any ‘On Page’ SEO you undertake as High ranking in Google i.e. Page 1 can  be achieved with the right amount of quality back-links for competitive search terms. Competitive search terms tend to be those ones that drive the most traffic.

There is a lot of confusion – even amongst SEO companies – when understanding the affect of back links. Some companies purport to offer the ‘Holy Grail’ of SEO that will solve all your page ranking problems. However the truth is there are two strategies you can follow to achieve Google TOP 10 ranking for any given keyword.

1) Develop an authority site – This usually only applies to businesses that have been around for a long time and as a consequence Google has grown up with them and recognises their web site to be an authority site. 2) The domain name mirrors a key search phrase – If you own a domain name that mirrors a key search term then Google weights this quite heavily. At one time this was a very important factor but it less so now.

3) The only option available to companies where the above does not apply to them is a high volume of quality back-links. What we specialise at 7 SEO is effectively ‘undertaking a huge amount of Internet Marketing involving all the tools available such as article writing, directory submission, Social bookmarking submission etc. and creating a wave of ‘Internet Publicity’ that Google and other search engines readily find. All this ‘Internet publicity points to your website. Think of it this way. London is going to have a lot more signs to it than a small village in Somerset. The reason is that many more people are looking for London than this imaginary village. Google interprets this as importance and ranks your website higher.
